This case highlights how indoor environmental restoration, mold illness home remediation, and indoor decontamination for sensitized individuals can uncover environmental issues that remain long after traditional mold remediation has been completed.
Client Profile
A Southern California family was referred to Purified Environments by a physician who was helping the wife address significant health symptoms. The family had previously experienced mold-related issues in their home and had already completed remediation and fine-particle cleaning.
They had been told that post-remediation air testing indicated the home was fine. Yet both husband and wife continued to feel unwell while living there, experiencing symptoms commonly associated with mold illness, environmental sensitivities, and prolonged exposure to indoor contaminants within a previously water-damaged building.
Despite investing substantial time and money with multiple vendors, they still did not have a clear explanation for why their symptoms continued or confidence that the indoor environment had been fully addressed.
The Challenge
The family had spent nearly a year attempting to resolve the environmental concerns in their home. They had encountered what they later described as “so many wrong turns” and “so many vendors without the big picture.”
Although previous air testing did not show extraordinary mold levels, additional indoor environmental testing and a comprehensive environmental assessment obtained by the homeowners revealed extremely elevated actinomycetes and other environmental contaminants associated with water-damaged buildings.
The occupants reported persistent concerns that included:
- Sleeplessness
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Ongoing feelings of illness inside the home
- A lack of meaningful improvement following previous remediation and cleaning
The challenge was not simply to perform another cleaning. It was to identify what had been missed, comprehensively stabilize the environment, objectively verify the results, and help a discouraged family understand why this approach would be different.
What Previous Efforts Missed
Our investigation confirmed that there were no remaining active moisture conditions amplifying contamination within the home. However, previous remediation and cleaning efforts had not comprehensively addressed the residual contamination or the conditions that could allow it to accumulate again.
Critical elements had been missed, including:
- A sufficiently detailed whole-home fine-particle decontamination process
- Verification that cleaning objectives had been achieved throughout the environment
- Appropriate air filtration and purification strategies
- Environmental engineering controls to limit contaminant reaccumulation
- Clear ongoing cleaning and maintenance recommendations
Traditional mold remediation may remove damaged materials and visible microbial growth. For sensitized occupants, however, microbial contamination, mycotoxins, endotoxins, microbial fragments, and other byproducts associated with a previously water-damaged environment may continue contributing to occupant exposure.
Purified Environments does not diagnose or treat illness. Our role is to address the indoor environment so occupants can reduce ongoing re-exposure while continuing to work with their medical providers.
Our Investigation and Consultation
Before beginning work, Skip spent significant time consulting with the homeowners, reviewing their testing, answering questions, and explaining the environmental factors that previous vendors had not adequately addressed.
The client later shared that this education was one of the most meaningful aspects of the experience:
“My initial call with Skip was filled with numerous questions, and he patiently answered each one of them and explained things no previous vendor had as to what was actually going on in our house that wasn’t being resolved.”
Kenneth then completed an in-depth inspection of the home to confirm that moisture sources had been resolved, evaluate the remaining contamination concerns, and determine the proper scope and sequencing for the project.
The investigation focused on contamination source identification, building diagnostics, confirmation of moisture control, and developing an evidence-based remediation strategy designed to restore a healthy indoor environment.
This process gave the family something they had been missing: a comprehensive explanation, a clear plan, and reassurance that the entire environmental picture was being considered.
The Solution
Using the PEPN™ HEART Protocol®, our team implemented a comprehensive whole home decontamination process designed to support indoor air quality restoration and long-term environmental restoration.
The project included:
- Whole-home ISO-based, hospital-level fine-particle cleaning.
- Detailed physical cleaning of accessible surfaces, contents, and environmental reservoirs.
- Careful cleaning techniques designed to remove rather than redistribute contamination.
- Vapor treatment to denature biologic contaminants that could not be reached through physical cleaning alone.
- Enhanced air filtration to continuously capture airborne particulate.
- Air purification designed to denature viable biologic contaminants.
- Environmental engineering strategies to reduce rapid contaminant reaccumulation.
- Customized ongoing cleaning and maintenance recommendations.
The objective was not merely to make the home appear clean. It was to reduce measurable environmental contaminants, verify that the work was successful, and establish systems that would help the family maintain a more stable indoor environment over time.
Objective Verification
Verification was incorporated throughout the project using third-party laboratory testing, and post-remediation verification to confirm successful contaminant reduction.
Our quality-control and post-project testing included:
- ATP surface testing throughout the cleaning process
- A project target of readings below 500 RLU, consistent with the stringent benchmark used within the PEPN™ hospital-level cleaning protocol
- Viable air and surface testing
- ERMI testing
- HERTSMI-2 testing
- Actinomycetes testing
- Endotoxin testing
Post-decontamination laboratory results showed that previously elevated environmental markers had been reduced to non-detectable or appropriately low levels.
In some tested areas, HERTSMI-2 scores that had previously ranged from approximately 20 to 30 were reduced to 0.
These findings provided evidence-based confirmation that the environmental decontamination had achieved its intended objectives.
The Outcome
The family reported noticing meaningful improvements very soon after returning to the purified home.
Approximately one week after completion, the homeowners wrote:
“My husband and I are amazed at how much better we feel just one week post deep clean with them.”
They also emphasized the responsiveness, patience, and attention to detail provided throughout the process:
“Right from the start everyone was so helpful and responsive.”
“Attention to detail was very evident.”
At a time when the family had become doubtful and discouraged after numerous unsuccessful attempts, the project restored both their confidence in the home and confidence that the restoration of their indoor environment had been completed using evidence-based protocols.
The client summarized her experience by saying:
“After a year of thinking we were doing what we needed to do for mold remediation in our home, so many wrong turns, so many vendors without the big picture, and so much money spent, my husband and I were still sick. Purified came in, inspected our home, and gave us answers to our lingering problem.”
The improvements described are client-reported and should not be interpreted as a medical outcome or guarantee. Purified Environments treats indoor environmental conditions—not illness—and encourages clients to continue working with qualified healthcare professionals.
Long-Term Environmental Management
The family was not left with a completed project and no direction for what came next.
We taught them how to manage their indoor environment through:
- Proper air filtration
- Continuous air purification
- Appropriate cleaning methods
- Routine maintenance
- Strategies to reduce future accumulation of fine particles and biologic contaminants
These recommendations were designed to help preserve the gains achieved during the project and reduce the likelihood that the family would need to repeat the same extensive process again.
Long-term success depended on maintaining indoor air quality, reducing future environmental burden, and preserving the gains achieved through whole-structure restoration.
Why This Case Matters
This case demonstrates why environmental restoration for mold illness, CIRS, and indoor decontamination after mold often require far more than traditional remediation alone. Comprehensive indoor environmental assessment, contamination source identification, and ongoing maintenance are often necessary to restore a healthier indoor environment for sensitized occupants.
Successful environmental stabilization may require more than source removal. It can also require:
- Identifying all relevant contamination pathways
- Performing comprehensive whole-home decontamination
- Measuring cleanliness during the project
- Verifying results through independent laboratory testing
- Implementing filtration and purification controls
- Teaching occupants how to maintain the environment over time
The family did not need another vendor addressing one isolated component. They needed a team capable of seeing and managing the entire environmental picture.
