Fire and Smoke Damage Testing

Why Fire and Smoke Damage Testing?

Smoke from wildfires can enter homes and buildings and leave behind harmful contaminants including metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), soot, ash, char and more. Often occupants will complain of a strong odor and may suffer from symptoms such as:

  • Persistent coughing
  • Headaches
  • Feelings of nausea
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Lightheadedness

Thorough indoor testing after a fire event is essential as it provides documentation and proof for your insurance. It also establishes a comprehensive baseline to confirm that the decontamination process is complete before re-entering your space safely.

Smoke Damage Testing Options for Environments Affected by Fires

Soot, Char, and Ash (Starts at $555)

Air and surface testing to identify levels of these particulates in the air and on surfaces. Can be used to compare before and after decontamination treatments to verify improvements. This is most common and affordable pre and post-decontamination

Home Survey Predict (Starts at $1550)

This VOC testing can determine overall VOC levels in indoor environments and can be used as a baseline to compare improvements after decontamination. This test evaluates up to 100 different volatile organic compounds that can remain in the environment and could impact health.

MS Fire Check Analysis (Starts at $1550)

This test will specify levels of VOCs particularly related to fires such as benzyne. These types of VOCs tend to dissipate rather rapidly on their own and are not a significant health risk.  This testing may be used for insurance or other determinant purposes.

Metals Testing (Starting at $795)

After a fire, metal particulate can be disbursed into the surrounding environments and can impact health. These contaminants will land on surfaces and should be removed during cleanup processes in indoor environments.  This test can be utilized to ensure proper/thorough cleanup was performed.

Dioxin/Furan Testing (Starts at $2295)

Dioxins and furans are known carcinogens that can be present at higher levels in environments after fires as they are biproducts of combustion. Testing for this is challenging and expensive due to their complex chemical structure, low allowable concentrations and need for highly specialized analytical techniques..

Smoke Damage testing is strongly recommended particularly for sensitized individuals
