Tips To Maintain A Healthy Indoor Space That Has Been Affected By Contaminants

Ventilate Your Home

  • Whenever possible, improve air circulation indoors by opening windows and doors.
  • If there’s a lot of ash and debris outside, wait to ventilate your home until after the cleanup, and use air cleaners in the interim.

Utilize Air Cleaners to Eliminate Particles and Odors

  • Departments of Health recommend using air cleaners equipped with HEPA filters for particulate matter and activated carbon filters for volatile organic compounds like benzene.
  • Keep the air cleaners running until the odors have dissipated.
  • Avoid using ozone generators in spaces that are occupied. Ozone can be harmful to breathe and high levels of ozone can also harm plants and damage materials such as paint, rubber, natural fibers, electrical wiring, fabrics, and artwork.

Inspect Your HVAC System

  • If your system permits, consider upgrading to a MERV 11 or higher-rated filter.
  • Replace filters as they become clogged or at least once a month for up to a year after the area has been cleaned.
  • Think about having your HVAC ducts professionally cleaned.
  • Clean the air intakes for the furnace and air conditioning units.
  • Install active air purification MAK technology into the system and run regularly.
