Mold In Your Home? Are You A Tenant?

We Can Help

Did you know California requires landlords to provide a booklet to all tenants to inform them of the dangers of black mold and mold toxicity in their space?

Figuring out how to address a mold problem in your home or building can be an intimidating task, but solving the problem quickly is in the landlords’ and tenants’ best interest. Please find more information below about landlord responsibilities and tenants’ rights regarding mold in rentals.

Next Steps

1. Report the problem to your landlord! Let them know that you realize it is your responsibility to report leaks and you expect that you might have a moisture problem due to reoccurring mold. Ask them to schedule an inspection and moisture mapping/testing so that everyone can have peace of mind.

2. Follow-up and give them the opportunity to resolve if you don’t get prompt response. Do these things in writing/via email so you have it documented.

3. If you still don’t get a response, try a 3rd follow up and send them the link to our landlord resources page and home page and remind them that per CA law they are responsible to resolve this within 30 days. Provide the link to the CA Dept of Health website with the mold booklet.

4. If you still have no luck, we recommend that you schedule and pay for the inspection and testing. You will have the expense up front, but you could likely be reimbursed and you will have 3rd party data demonstrating the problem and providing recommendations.

5. Still no luck? Contact your local code enforcement.
