Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of chemicals that can become aerosolized. VOCs can be harmful to both your health and the environment. Additionally, VOCs can negatively affect plants and other living organisms. You often find VOCs in building materials such as carpets, adhesives, cement, or solvents, and they are used in the manufacturing of numerous items we use daily, including cosmetics, markers, and air fresheners. Unexpected chemical reactions such as the use of ozone air purifiers can cause harmful increases in VOCs.
Some people are more tolerant than others of VOCs such as those found in new carpets or paint. However, if you are feeling unwell in your environment, VOCs may be contributing to the problem, and testing may be helpful to uncover elevated total VOCs, including Formaldehyde.
In these cases, VOCs presence is often overlooked when poor health symptoms occur. These include:
- Eye and throat irritation
- Respiratory issues
- Dizziness
- Nausea/Vomiting
- Long-term side effects such as cancer and/or neurological disorders
VOCs can harm plants and other living organisms as well.
